Dr. Avinash Sharma

I have recently joined as an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Bombay where I head the research group 3DVisLab. Prior to this position, I was an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, IIT Jodhpur (2023-2026) and an assistant professor at Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT), IIIT Hyderabad (2015-2022). Apart from academic experience, I have also worked as research scientist at Xerox Research Center (2013-2015).

I graduated with my PhD from INRIA Rhone-Alpes (Grenoble University) in 2012. Overall, I have 18+ years of research experience in the 3D Computer Vision field and have been working on research problems related to 3D human body modeling, garment digitization, 4D human pose estimation, human face and hand modelling as well as 3D terrain modelling and large scale point cloud analysis for autonomous navigation task. I have published multiple research papers in top tier forums like IJCV, ICCV, CVPR, ECCV, ACM-MM, ICRA, AAAI along with multiple patents granted. I have received multiple faculty awards funds from Google Inc. USA and Stability.AI USA. My group also won the prestigious Qualcomm Fellowship award thrice and have joint collaborations with MPII Saarbrucken and University of Brown. I have also worked with multiple government and private research groups in the country including BEL (for the Indian Air Force), TCS Research, Cyient Inc, Myntra Inc, Denso Inc and have mentored multiple startups in the domain of 3D Computer Vision.

Here at CSE@IITB, I am building a large group of students whose research is inclined towards 3D computer vision, AR/VR and Graphics.
